I think George Selden does a great job of developing these characters so early in the story. We can really see who they are, and their personality traits, by their words and actions. Tucker asks if Chester is from Connecticut. "Yes," said Chester. "I guess I'll never see it again," he added wistfully. Wistfully is such a great word to describe what Chester is feeling. It means a feeling of saddness and desire. It tells us, as readers, that Chester clearly wants to go back to his home in the country.
Here are some questions for thought:
In the first chapter, we learned that Tucker loves scrounging, or collecting. What is his second favorite activity? I'll give you a hint...look at the very beginning of the chapter on page 16.
How does Chester wind up in a Times Square subway station? What does this make you feel for Chester?
Prediction: At the very end of the chapter, Chester shouts to Tucker to watch out for a cat. We know cats and mice don't really get along, but how do you think this cat will treat Chester?
Great work everyone! I can't wait to read your comments! Even if I don't get a chance to respond personally to your comment, please know that I read each and every one!
Happy Reading,
Mrs. Walker
